ALISON CRITCHLOW |
 |
| ‘The main concern of my work is to paint my responses to the natural world, capturing a particular experience and recreating it in paint. My aim is to capture not just the surface detail of the landscape, but the energy, atmosphere and movement that make up the whole experience, so that the painting has a life and energy of it's own. An "equivalent" that the viewer can reflect upon. The ephemeral made permanent. I live in Cumbria, and so my paintings reflect the landscape around me; dramatic, mountainous and ever changing. I often paint outside which gives immediacy and helps to create a sense of place. My work always starts with a particular sensation wind, air, movement, light, calmness, those things that bring the landscape to life, and can often highlight a view usually unnoticed. I try to paint things that seem to me beautiful, and hope to make paintings that will inspire others. I often return to the same places again and again, as the paintings seem to gain something when I know the place intimately. This serves to highlight the changes from one season to the next. The cycles of nature and it's great power are a never-ending inspiration, and one that I have been exploring for several years, both in large oil paintings and more recently in smaller, acrylic pictures.’ |
